The Swimming Hole Dilemma
So, you want to go swimming in the river. You've heard of the Townsend Wye and you've heard us talk about Greenbrier. Which one is right for your family? Which one should you drive to?
Both are excellent swimming holes, but they're different experiences. Here is the breakdown to help you decide.
The Townsend Wye
Location: Near the Townsend entrance (the "Quiet Side" of the Smokies), where the Little River and Middle Prong meet.
Distance from Cobbly Nob: ~35-40 minutes.
The Vibe: Wide, sunny, and bustling. It's where the Little River and Middle Prong meet, creating a large, open area. It feels more like a "beach" than a secluded swimming hole.
Water Characteristics:
- •Generally shallower (rarely more than 3-4 feet deep in most areas).
- •Warmer (usually in the 60s-70s by mid-summer, compared to the 50s at Greenbrier).
- •Slower-moving and calmer.
- •Muddier (the larger volume of water stirs up more sediment).
Best For:
- •Tubing: The calm water and sandy banks make it perfect for floating tubes.
- •Toddlers: The shallow water is safe for very young children.
- •Sunbathing: There's a large grassy bank perfect for laying out.
- •Picnicking: Plenty of space for a picnic.
- •Families: The shallow water and calm atmosphere are family-friendly.
Crowds: It gets very crowded. Parking can be a nightmare by midday. On summer weekends, the area can feel like a beach resort.
Parking: Limited parking. Arrive early or go late to avoid the crowds.
Amenities: Bathrooms, picnic areas, parking.
The Greenbrier Swimming Hole
Location: Greenbrier entrance (off Hwy 321), about 10-15 minutes from Cobbly Nob.
Distance from Cobbly Nob: ~10-15 minutes.
The Vibe: Wooded, shady, and intimate. It feels like you've discovered a secret spot in the forest.
Water Characteristics:
- •Deeper (pool-like depth, perfect for real swimming).
- •Colder (usually in the 50s, even in summer).
- •Crystal clear (you can see the bottom).
- •Faster-moving (the water is more turbulent from the falls upstream).
Best For:
- •Swimming: The depth is perfect for actual swimming and submerging.
- •Nature Lovers: The forest setting and clear water appeal to people who want a more natural experience.
- •Avoiding Crowds: It's quieter and more peaceful.
- •Photography: The clear water and forest setting are photogenic.
- •Hiking: It's close to Porters Creek Trail and other hiking opportunities.
Crowds: Much quieter than Townsend Wye. You can often find the spot to yourself, especially if you arrive early.
Parking: Easy parking. The second lot (the one we recommend) is rarely full.
Amenities: Picnic area, parking. No bathrooms at the swimming hole itself, but there are bathrooms at the Greenbrier Picnic Area.
The Verdict
If You Want to Float in a Tube or Have Very Small Children: Make the drive to the Townsend Wye. The shallow water is safer for toddlers, and tubing is more fun in calm water.
If You Want a Refreshing Dip After a Hike, Want to Avoid a Long Drive, or Prefer a Quieter, Forested Setting: Stick to Greenbrier. It's right in your backyard at Summit & Shores! The clear water and peaceful setting are hard to beat.
If You're Torn: Visit both! Greenbrier is close, so you can easily visit it multiple times during your stay. Townsend Wye is worth the drive if you want a different experience.
