The Perfect Photo Stop

Everyone wants that perfect Smoky Mountain photo to remember their trip. While the sign at the National Park entrance is the classic shot, there is a more unique, picturesque spot just minutes from our cabins: the Emerts Cove Covered Bridge.

This bridge has become increasingly popular with photographers and Instagram enthusiasts. It's the kind of spot that makes you stop and say, "Wow, this is beautiful." It's the kind of photo that makes people ask, "Where was that taken?"

About the Bridge

Located in the historic Pittman Center community (just down the road from Cobbly Nob), this bridge spans the Little Pigeon River. While it looks ancient, it was actually built in 2000 to honor Frederick Emmert, a Revolutionary War soldier who was one of the area's first settlers.

The Design: The bridge is built with traditional timber construction, mimicking the style of historic covered bridges. The design is authentic to the period, even though the bridge is modern.

The Setting: The bridge is set in a beautiful valley, surrounded by mountains and forest. The river below is clear and scenic.

The Atmosphere: There's something magical about the bridge. The timber construction, the river, the mountains—it all combines to create a sense of history and timelessness.

Why It's a Great Photo Op

Architecture: The timber construction against the backdrop of the river and trees is stunning. The angles and shadows create interesting compositions.

Setting: It's quiet. Unlike the busy downtown bridges, you can usually get a shot without 50 strangers in the background.

Lighting: The morning mist rising off the river creates a magical, moody atmosphere perfect for photography. The golden hour (sunrise and sunset) provides warm, directional light.

Uniqueness: It's not as famous as other Gatlinburg attractions, so it feels like a "discovery." Your photos will look unique and special.

How to Find It

From Cobbly Nob, head west on Hwy 321. Drive about 5-10 minutes. Turn left onto Emerts Cove Road. You'll drive through a beautiful valley before reaching the bridge. It leads directly into the Greenbrier entrance of the park.

The bridge is well-marked. You can't miss it.

Photography Tips

Golden Hour is Magic: The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset provides warm, directional light that's flattering to the bridge and landscape. If you can, visit during these times.

Overcast Days are Good: Cloudy days provide soft, diffused light that's flattering to the bridge and eliminates harsh shadows.

Get Low: Try shooting from below the bridge, looking up. This creates a dramatic angle.

Include the River: The river adds context and beauty to the shot. Include it in your composition.

Use a Tripod: If you're serious about photography, bring a tripod. It allows you to get sharp images and compose carefully.

Bring a Polarizing Filter: If you have one, this reduces glare from the water and makes the sky more dramatic.

Take Multiple Shots: Try different angles, different times of day, different lighting conditions. You'll get better results with multiple attempts.

Important Local Tip

The land surrounding the bridge is largely private property. Please be respectful.

  • Park in designated pull-offs only.
  • Do not block driveways.
  • Stay on the public right-of-way.
  • Don't trespass on private property.
  • Be respectful of the residents who live nearby.

Best Times to Visit

Early Morning: The mist rising off the river is magical. The light is soft and warm. There are fewer people. Late Afternoon: The golden hour provides warm, directional light. The shadows are interesting. Rainy Days: The mist and moisture create a moody, atmospheric setting. Fall: The surrounding foliage adds color and beauty. Spring: The river is high from snowmelt, creating a more dramatic scene.

What to Bring

  • Camera: Obviously. Bring a good camera if you have one.
  • Tripod: For sharp images and self-portraits.
  • Filters: Polarizing filter, ND filter, etc.
  • Lens Cloth: To clean your lens.
  • Jacket: It can be cool, especially in the morning.
  • Patience: Good photography takes time. Be patient and take multiple shots.
